I don't think people need to run out and upgrade to Vista, but for a new PC it makes no sense to go XP. I also believe it was a huge mistake to release Vista in anything but 64-Bit. 32-Bit needs to die as well. Sure wish they'd get their act together.........
I'd be willing to bet that Microsoft will either be releasing a new Windows version (or a completely re-thought version of Vista) by Q4 2009, or a substantial upgrade (paid not free) to XP to bridge the gap between it and the new OS.

Vista's reputation and adoption rates are similar or worse than ME so you can be sure they're working their butts off behind the scenes.

First thing that's gotta go is the DRM crap lurking behind the scenes (that includes only allowing certified drivers).

I have run a couple variations of the Vista SP1
Waiting now for the final SP1.
I even uninstalled the last SP1 version.
Personally I couldn't see a huge improvement
Maybe a bit snappier...but certainly nothing to get hyped about.
If its the best they can do...then sorry for them!
My prediction is that some of us will use XP till MS7(whatever) comes out and jump right into that.
Thats not to say people even some of us won't use Vista now but I for one will be keeping XP on the other hard drives.
Oh and sure I don't have the exact latest and greatest, however this system is pretty good on XP and Vista with everything enabled.
No way I am going out and plopping a "G" roughly on another system used for emails internet lookups and general word and photog stuff.

The only reason Microsoft is even still supporting XP is the amount of large corporations that are bitching and moaning about upgrading. They really could care less about the casual users. All it is gonna take is for software writers to start writing Vista only programs for one large corporation to adopt, which is inevitable, and XP will get the boot. XP is fine, I never said otherwise. But it is getting old. As for the next OS coming out in 2009, it has already been reported on the WWW that MS themselves are stating 2011 is the earliest we will see anything. Then the same people will bitch and moan that it sucks and they won't get it until SP1. Man, if ANY of you looked back to the introduction of XP, it was the SAME OLD SHIT being said as you all say about Vista now. Exactly the same, word for word. Vista is no ME and never will be. No reason to change from XP so far, but it will come. All those holding onto Windows 98 said the same thing over and over about XP. Now the XP people are saying it. As for 64-bit, I prefer to atleast use the architecture I payed for in my CPU and I sure enjoy seeing/using 4GB of ram. It's not hard to use 2GB+ of ram. Maybe if you are a casual user you don't, but when I am working on my PC I can easily much up 2GB+. 4GB allows me to still have a responsive PC, unlike 2GB causing massive paging. Stay with XP, it suits those that use it well.

My personal experience w/ the SP1 beta differs from what that article states. It improved my boot and shut down times by a decent margin on my aging gaming rig (Vista starts and shuts down lightning quick on the computer I built for my bro which was less than $500. Power to being able to search in Google in less than 40 seconds and it shuts down in about 10 seconds (not including after updates, obviously).

For the most part, I agree w/ b1lk1 ... My experience w/ Vista has been mostly positive and I personally consider it to be better, albeit not by much, than XP for new systems ...

A lot of the stuff in SP1 was already updated with hotfixes and updates, so if you've been keeping up with your updates you won't see a major change. As for me, I've noticed some major improvements since I got Vista last March. I think Vista is much better than XP. And XP is old (more than 5 years) and people will have to upgrade sometime. Not everyone upgraded to XP right away either.

This is how service packs have always worked. This is nothing new. That is the one thing I just do not understand about the "I'll wait for SP1" people are thinking. There is no logic in that. I have my beefs with Vista as much as XP as well. I just killed off ANOTHER Vista install just by being stupid when changing hardware and not properly changing drivers. Let's face it, Windows in ANY form sucks. We may as well stick to the latest version they actually care about, LOL!!!
