Well, depending on the price, I only expect enthusiasts to consider these cards. I've seen the 580 priced from $500 to almost $600. And, regardless of whether they need it, people will always snatch up the (seemingly) better product.

^^^ Only the folks that are in the dark as to what the GPU RAM actually means....folks that understand GPU Architecture know better ;) ......the additional 512 MB won't make any difference.....

Yeah, that's what I meant by "seemingly." Most people will go for the big numbers.

check out the 460 2gb review. only at 2560 itll make a difference, albeit small because of the weak core/memory subsystem

Every time the 1gb is a better buy than the 2gb in reviews. Mostly because you have to use slower ram for the 2gb cards. Most games don't go over 1gb of ram. Crysis is one of the few games that does and that is only in rare conditions with a crap load going on.

The additional 512MB of memory really helps the GTX480 to pull away from the 5870 at 2560x1600. I've seen it in several reviews so there is a need for more than 1GB of memory.

I'm not positive about this, but the additional memory may also benefit in SLI/Crossfire setups since the data in memory is mirrored between the cards. In a single GTX480 setup the GPU has 1536MB of VRAM to work with. With a two card SLI setup, each GPU effectively has 768MB of VRAM to work with.

From a post over at EVGA: "the retailer could be cashing in on those desparate enough to forget that time doesn't stop, that not being first isn't the end of the world."
