Default Google CEO says online anonymity is "dangerous" [The Huffington Post]

Eric Schmidt On Privacy (VIDEO): Google CEO Says Anonymity Online Is 'Dangerous'

Quote:
Speaking on a panel at the event, Schmidt argued that anonymity on the Internet is dangerous. "In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you," he said.
Schmidt took the stance that governments may eventually put an end to anonymity. "We need a [verified] name service for people," he said. "Governments will demand it."
It should be noted that he makes a distinction between lack of anonymity and privacy.

As much as I'm personally concerned about how much information about me a private company like Google is keeping for it's own personal business use, I fully support the basic premise behind needing to be able to identify online posters / bloggers / etc....

Worst case scenario (and the one that's always paraded out first) is of course the need to be able to identify online pedophiles / preditors, but it goes further than that when you consider things like libel. IMO, we really do need some form of "marker" that would allow (under court order) individual citizens to address "anonymous" behaviour which is harmful to the individual.

On a regular ol forum it would be nice. But I would think that lack of anonymity would lead to more problems where it really counts- those who would have highly malevolent purposes could find a way to misidentify themselves- possibly causing others to be blamed for their actions.
