Tweaktown has a review of the new G92-based 8800GTS 512MB up! The card looks good but power consumption is absolutely through the roof So much for the G92 using less power. Unfortunately, it is not benched against an 8800GTX and it is overall about 10-12% faster than a stock 8800GT. If I had put in an order for an 8800GT 512MB and was still waiting on one of the ridiculous backorder lists, I would feel pretty betrayed now. Looks like we know where alot of the G92 cores were going: to the 8800GTS 512MB. FROM TWEAKTOWN: Getting down to the nitty gritty there are some key details we should make mention of. Based on the new G92 core, we have the standard features to come with it such as PCI Express 2.0, a 65nm die and 1:1 texture addressing units : texture filtering units. These are the features we know to be standard across all of the upcoming 8800GTS G92 based graphics cards, but as far as model specifics go we have in this case 512MB of GDDR3 memory. That 512MB comes clocked in at 1940MHz DDR while the core and shader clocks come in at 650MHz and 1625MHz respectively LINK: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTS 512MB G92 Tested :: TweakTown |

Well the G92 GTS 512 only really pulls ahead of the GT 512 by a decent margin at higher resolutions. Looking at the Crysis SP demo benches at 1280x1024 there is only a few FPS difference. And the same holds true for many of the other games tested. I have zero regret about my GT @ 1680x1050. I already have a 3rd party cooler so that was not an extra expense and if you are playing with headphones the stock fan noise is a moot point. Is a quieter card worth another $100? Not in my opinion. Will it actually be available without horrendous backorders... we'll have to wait and see? I know I'm glad I got a GT on launch day at launch price. G92 GTS 512 is too pricey for me. :)

I do get the impression that these G92s cores are running a bit high to try and boost performance. I wonder what the RMA rate of the G92 cw with G80 is as a result.

I am not that impressed but will step-up to it. Though the only problem is that the day it comes out is the day that my step-up ends. So it better be on the step-up list. And the Crysis benchmark the stock GTS beats the OC2 GTX. So a heavy OC GTS might beat the Ultra XXX.
