Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love [Ars]

I think that for some people, whether or not ads are actually displayed on a web page, that web site won't make a "sale" anyway.

For instance, taking myself as an example, I don't click on ads much less buy something. I do use a pop-up and ad blocker add-on with Firefox but that's because I don't like all the moving graphics in a web site's margins. I wouldn't have clicked on the ads even if I didn't have the blocker.

people use ad blockers for hardware canucks? there's like.. no ads on this site to begin with (well, there are, but they blend in nicely)

I often will purposely click on ads on websites i like as my way of supporting them. (just incase they go by click)

i mainly use ad blocker because it messes up my browsing, and since my present connection is not the best i could get, well, lets say 2-3+ seconds everytime on the same page do add up :)

I am guessing HWC doesn't make any money but they have to pay. If they do make money it is only cause of people buying stuff from their store. The ads are 1 on top and 1 on bottom. Some are pretty good as they relate to tech and some are not so good but this site is tame. Like Fixt said don't use ad blockers unless you want to pay for websites as some are thinking of it like The New York Times.

After reading this, I turned off Adblock for Hardware Canucks. nick_black's right. I didn't even realize Hardware Canucks has so little ads to begin with, unlike other sites that bombard you with ads.

Yeah I only have ad-block on for adult sites now (Opera ad-block), the only ad I have blocked from tech sites is that damn weight loss ad that looks like a gay porn ad on MaximumPC, that thing is annoying and I have no idea why they don't have ads that are more tech oriented.
