very promising...but ever since I've heard about it I got a nagging doubt about its on the fly data compression it does (they claim like 0.5 - 0.6x size data writes). GREAT idea...IF it works :)

anand did a great job again with ssd explanation. For now, this looks really expensive, but time will tell.

Unfortunately for us, if WD and Seagate does not enter strongly in the production of SSD prices will still remain high.

WD has been dabbling with SSDs for a little while now. So there is good hope there.
Seagate has reportedly inked deals with Sandforce (and rumored to have done so with another controller company). So the future looks bright for them as well.....maybe.

However
, neither HDD company make NAND chips (which is where most of the cost of an SSD resides....besides profit that is). Blame Apple for high prices of NAND as Apple sucked the market damn near dry to produce all their iphones and ipod and other iCrap.

Its a chicken vs Egg problem as we need higher production to drop SSD prices and thus make them popular to the masses....but higher production will only happen if they get popular!
