They may not be super refined, as in they can be loud, power hogs, but their performance stands on it's own.
I don't think anyone could expect anymore for the 4870x2, other than a better cooler. At this level of performance and price people tend to be willing to pay for the best. When the x2 came out it was, then Nvidia released the 295. It didn't matter if the x2 was almost as good, it wasn't the best, so it lost a lot of its value and buyers. Being the best warrants a price increase beyond what the performance dictates in many cases (sucks for us buyers though).
With the 5870 coming in at just over $400, I can't see anyone paying more than $250 to $300 for a 4870 x2 when they can have more performance, DX11 and greatly improved power consumption characteristics for not that much more with the 5870.
