I would have expected something like this on [H] or on XS, but not on HWC.
OK you have a point but the GTS250 is different, new PCB, lower power consumption shorter and the whole 55nm shrink (albeit that was the 9800GTX+). They did CHANGE the card. They didn't JUST change the name. No matter how small the change, it did occur. ATI also rebranded most of RV6xx to the 4xxx series (all the lower end cards). They all do it, Nvidia just seems to get beat up the most for it.

Wrong again. While the PCB may have been different in the gts250... it doesn't mean anything. Sapphire and XFX often like to change the PCB of ATi cards, add voltage regulators, extra power connectors etc etc... that doesn't make it a different [model of] card.

Power consumption? what? seriously? From what I've seen, 2W on load difference. Well Within margin of error, IMO.

On the ATi side:

The low end 4xxx series cards are all cut down rv770 chips with smaller bus, lower speed memory, and less shaders enabled. For example the 4350 is based on rv710, 4670 is based on rv730, 4770 is based on rv740, etc etc.

Again... NOT a rename.

I will concede, however, that the only time I have ever seen a legitimate ATi re-badge was in the laptop market about 4 years ago when they renamed the mobility x1700 (dx9 part) to the mobility x2500 (exact same dx9 part).

Fudzilla - ATI to re-brand Radeon 3x00 to 4x00

There will be a new bios coming shortly that will allow OEMs to re-brand Radeon 3450, 3650 and even 3850 to Radeon 4xx0 series. We still don’t know the final brands of these “new” cards but we know that this will happen.
Yes, it was a while ago.

About the GTS250, it only needs 1 6 pin, the others needed 2....

Funny story about the 8800GT to 9800GT.

Working with a few BFG 9800GT's when they first came out - I pulled off stick on the "bottom" (the main picture) and lo and behold... an 8800GT sticker... such a shameless re badging they could even be bothered to take off the old sticker... Just BIOS update and charge people more for it

Also the 9800GTX+ was not a rebrand of the 8800GT series, but rather the 8800GTS SP version, however they did make slight physical improvements, mainly in terms of clock speed and unlike the 8800-9800 in which nothing changed.

I don't really see why people freak over "re badging". Products are re-branded in all markets and sectors across every product, all the time.

Are you seriously using fudzilla as a credible reference for your argument?

Yeah at first Nvidia just changed the name but shortly after that they made the jump to 55nm. But at first it was just rebranded 8800's.
