Default Have you Submerged your PC Today?

Here is an article I found on a how to use mineral oil to cool your rig.

I would have opted to place the PSU outside the case as it would create less heat inside. I was suprised to see that it took around an hour to get the CPU to idle temps.

whenever I these attempt I always wonder how many weeks would such build really last, I mean if used on regular basis... Take the fan on the PSU - the friction with oil is much higher then against water. Unless this fan is meant to be submerged I'd say it will be quickly dead.

Well they ran it like for 2 months and you in the video you do notice that the fan does slow a bit. You have to remember the oil is actually less dense than water. and I think if the PSU would have been out of the tank the temps would not have reached over 88°C As the PSU was moving heat directly above the CPU. Also the bubbles wouldn't have helped. The nice thing about oild is how well it dissipates the heat.

That looks interesting. I don't know if I would do it though.

Now all they need to do is start overclocking this rig. I figure if they add a few fans to the radiator, they might be able to sustain a decent overclock.

I'm curious what type of pump they used for this to pump the oil through the rad. A watercooling pump I'd think wouldn't be strong enough to pump a viscous liquid like oil.

** edit **

anyone know where I could pick up a aquastream pump locally in canada? :D

Eheim is the pump manufacturer. I tracked down a store locator link. I'm sure your local supplier can get their hands on one.

EHEIM North American
