Default 4750 (R740) Preview

Quote:
It's not exactly a secret that for companies like ATI and NVIDIA it is hard to keep the rumor mill under control. It was early January this year already that certain details surfaced on this lovely wise web hinting about the fact that ATI was working on 40nm products. Weeks later another rumor surfaced, some 40nm products should be arriving in the April/May timeframe and among the new products would be a chipset that carries product codename (ASIC name) RV740, slated as the first 40nm release. And that's interesting all by itself.

Now .. the technology industry works in mysterious ways and a pre-production model, slash prototype RV740 board to Guru3D.com arrived at our office a couple of days ago.

Not being tied to an NDA, without further ado, lets meet and greet with that RV740 graphics chipset. RV740 is positioned somewhere in the upper segment of budget level products. We are sure this product is going to be cheaper than 99 USD / 89 EUR. And considering where the product is targeted in the market, ATI is pulling a rabbit out the hat with a head the size of an elephant.

Why? What can you expect? Well, from what we see... performance is really close to the performance level of a Radeon HD 4850. So meanwhile others are re-labeling and reinserting their products at a new price point, ATI is moving forward with more interesting steps.Smaller die-size, more shader processors (compared to RV730), oh and that life-size rabbit I just mentioned... it's GDDR5 memory.

This looks to be a great budget card and well, at least "newer" than the "new" cards coming out of nVidia these days.

Let me go on record by saying that looks like the custom PowerColor card or an internal ATI engineering sample where they play around with possible memory configurations. Basically, they will destroy their HD 4830 in one swoop and I don't think that will happen. However, you never know.

4830 is 256-bit GDDR3, this is supposed to be 128-bit GDDR5? Higher clockspeed? They might just remove 4830 from the market, as they are all down-binned RV770 anyway...yeilds good enough that all chips pass 4850 testing?

All i can think, is less power used, simpler PCB design, smaller process...=win for cunsumer and re-labellers!

Who knows, like they said its an engineering sample and that anything can change. That being said, the R740 has LONG been rumoured to beat or at least come close to the 4830.

We've still got a couple months before we see this card come to the world stage, but if anything, its a great indication of whats to come and its *possible* performance.

What I love is the fact this was leaked on the eve of an Nvidia re-release.

LoL...good leak too...

Even though I own an Nvidia GTX260 (and a ATI 4670) I can't help but be a bit disgusted with Nvidia these days. It seems like they are less and less a hardware company and more and more a marketing company (aside from their really high end cards). I hope it bites them in the a$$.

Bring on the 47XX series (and the 49xx series), and DX11
(how long will it take Nvidia to adopt dx11).

Nvidia does marketing VERY well. I will give them that.

ATI's marketing on the other hand...well, let's just say not to expect many release products from them on HWC. :(

That IS unfortunate, but at teh same time, a lack of marketing, and still being a success, says alot.

But...I must say...this is the AMD mentality, not ATI's...Dirk Meyer needs a kick in the arse...he's following Hector Ruiz's style far too closely.

Makes me happy to be an AMD Fanboy in this regard.
I don't care if they obsolete some of their gear, because it means that e-tailers and retailers will either get good rebates on them, or mark them down more.
New, budget stuff is right up my alley :)
