Mushkin XP2-6400 (996580) 4x2 GB testing I previously had a 4x2 GB mix of 4 GB of this Mushkin & the 4 GB G.Skill DDR2-800 5-5-5 PQ kit. The G.Skill didn't clock nearly as well though, so it got relegated to use in my HTPC & i bought a second kit of the Mushkin. My P5B Deluxe finally got retired into use in my HTPC as well; it had a good run, but it was showing its age & wasn't quite doing what i wanted it to. So now i have a DFI UT P35-T2R + Q6700 + 4x2 GB Mushkin in the main rig. Still learning the ropes on this DFI, so results could be better, voltages lower, & timings tighter, etc. But for now i'm just getting the hang of tweaking things with it. I will say this DFI is far better already for working with OCing, though it requires a lot more fine tuning. Overnight i ran: 8 GB DDR2-1050 5-5-5-15 (7 hours P95 custom) http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/5...5055515dv4.jpg Now i tightened up perf. level to reasonable levels & am trying for something i can run for 24/7 use i hope. TRFC is deliberately very loose; will work on that later. 8 GB DDR2-1080 5-5-5-15 in testing http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/980...8055515pg5.jpg NB & PWM get absolutely scorching, as can be seen in the first screenie, so i'm using the house fan to help a little for now :p, & will likely pick up the side panel for my case that has the 250mm fan on it; hopefully will help a bit. So far i can't seem to use the 1333 MHz strap with this RAM; it seems to prefer the 1066 MHz strap, as it won't even boot at the speeds i can do with the 1066 MHz one, which seems kinda backwards to me. But it's a fun learning process, & damn, this mobo's voltage & settings control blows away my old P5B-D. |
Very nice! Yah get a fan over pwn and chipset, that is pretty hot. I just use a 120mm over that area and temps are around 40ish (I also use quad and 8GB). You can probably run lower volts thru NB as well. |

Alas, one instance of P95 conked out at 50 minutes, so i'm back to the drawing board. Dropped down to 9x multi to take the CPU out of the equation, & loosened up more of the subtimings around +2 each to see if that does anything. Then if that works, it's the fun process of tightening each one up till i figure out which one was too tight...:doh: And yes, rated RAM speed really means nothing...it hasn't forever now anyway. These DDR2-800 kits i have are equally as good as the DDR2-1000 Redlines. I consider both the Redlines @ 500 MHz & these XP2s @ 400 MHz to be pretty much the exact same thing, since either kit can run DDR2-800 4-4-4 or DDR2-1000 5-5-5 (or higher, usually to at least DDR2-1100) In my case, i don't think DDR2-1100 will happen, since running 4x2 GB is insanely hard on the NB & everything in general, but if i ripped out one of the kits & ran 2x2 GB, i'd be hitting much higher. I might try clocking one 2x2 GB later to see how they do, but it's somewhat pointless for me since i want to run 8 GB anyway. Based on clocking one kit on the P5B-D, i suspect i could hit DDR2-1120+ with just 2x2 GB on this better motherboard (or higher if i just wanted unstable screenshots...). Nothing wrong with that G.Skill either, though i personally prefer the Mushkin brand due to support & what i'd like to think is better QC testing. As for cooling the NB, yeah, before putting in this DFI, i actually had fans twist tied to the side of my case hanging down blowing air over the NB/RAM :haha: Was pretty ghetto-tastic actually. So i wanted to update this tonight, since i finally got around to testing the dimms individually. I did testing relatively briefly to save some time, so don't take these as absolutely 24/7 stable clocks, only more thorough testing would show that for sure. I ran Memtest86+ initially, & then HCI to about 20+% to get screenies. Though not always, if i can get 20% or higher with HCI, it's usually very close to stable if not stable. Mushkin 996580 XP2-6400 - DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 (two 2x2 GB kits) tested one dimm at a time. vdimm = 2.1V set in bios, which is read as 2.02V actual via software dimm 1 = DDR2-1124 5-5-5-15 dimm 2 = DDR2-1080 5-5-5-15 dimm 3 = DDR2-1100 5-5-5-15 dimm 4 = DDR2-1090 5-5-5-15 I'm very happy with the results. wow the fans are just hanging... nice ram though, wish i could clock my ocz's better 2.2v and the max it could go is 1033 at 5-5-5-15. Canadacomputers at the time were out of stock of the mushkins so had to go with ocz :/ but 4x2GB sets, those are awesome at those speeds. Mushkins gotta be the best brand ever. |
