My System Specs

Default 8gb VS 16gb

In 2 weeks I am building up an I7-2600k with the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z Z68 board. I plan to O/C the system (I don't just enjoy spending money on unlocked CPU's to run at default as a few too many people do =P) Anyways, I haven't been up and current with the new SB's and what kind of walls people have been hitting.
Is filling all 4 mem slots going to make a sizable loss in O/C potential? I know that the more ram, larger the stick the more problems you may encounter. But I am wondering how predominant it is. I typically have multiple VM's running, and I am looking to run as much memory as possible without affecting O/C performance.

While 8gb is twice what I have now (poor old AM2+ is working hard), and I am running 2x 2008R2's and an Ubuntu with a 7pro host. I just want to smooth it out as much as I can...and maybe throw in a few win 7 guests. Or swap to a Hyper-V host to further boost VM performance.

Thanks,
Scott

Age old question I remember from going yup 128 to 256 til now..your situation is a bit different..and I think the more ram (the dates you can yet/afford ) combined with the best pc you can get will be the best...what you are doing running vm's ..more team will help more so than a better oc

I am running the VM's for school. (Minus Ubuntu, that is just for personal). Cash really isn't an issue regarding 16gb VS 8Gb kits. Just looking at it from the performance angles. If I could run say @4.3 with 16gb of ram, vs 4.6+ @ 8gb. (In which case I would go with the 4.3 and more ram) Or if it isn't feasible to expect those kinds of numbers with a 16gb kit.

AFAIK, ram isn't as big of a factor for sandybridge as it was for nehalem, so you won't see a sizable difference in OC potential with 8GB vs 16GB

Honestly, it shouldnt effect your oc as you have a K cpu. You will be / should be oc'ing via increasing the multiplier and NOT the bclk...soo it shouldnt matter to the ram. 8Gb vs 16gb....honestly only dif is you set the ram to 2T (assuming your 4 sticks dont have a proper config built in) for 16GB or 1T for 8GB and off you go.

Im really, really diggin on the Corsair Vengeance LP "blue" 16GB kit lately. They are only 9-9-9's but meh, they work right out of the box at 1600 and are darn cheap..and its maybe 1 or 2 percent performance dif compared to 8's or 7's. :>

Since you can actually make use of it I would buy more RAM while it's still at rock bottom prices.

Yes, at the price it doesn't make sense to buy less RAM at this point, unless you're buying some crazy priced RAM.

I recently went from 8GB to 16GB with my 2600k and haven't had to touch my current OC (4.5GHz) and it's just as stable as it was before.
I would say might as well go 16GB now while memory is cheap. I upgraded because I figured RAM isn't going to get much cheaper, but it will get more expensive as it gets older. Max out while you still can! :)

Thanks for input guys, 16gb it is.
The 16 vengence LP set is exactly what I was looking at running. Dont have to worry about clearence issues if i go the route of the new thermal right (forget the name and phones suck for multi-browser) cpu cooler...love the low sandy temps :-)
Newegg.ca - CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R x2 Cheaper, and the red matches my Mobo (yes, I know matching shouldn't be my biggest concern) Just they don't have an LP in red that I have found =(
