Question 1600 vs 2000

looking at to sets of g skill ripjaws

$155 1600 8-8-8-24
$175 2000 9-9-9-27

the overall speed is faster but the latency is a little higher think its worth the extra 20 bucks??
would it help with overclocking getting faster ram??

for over clocking get the 2000 but will you see a difference in day to day use?? no.

if you lax timings on the cheaper one, could one perhaps bomp it up to the more expensive one? :)

Performance wise, I doubt very much you'd see any difference at all. In all honesty.... the idea of high clocking ram for overclockers was more about overcoming the 1:1 ratio limitation on intel chips when raising FSB. Once folks started clocking FSB above 400, memory rated DDR2 800 started to be a concern WRT holding back higher FSB clocks (had a multiplier for memory rather than a divider).

That said.... it's completely up to you, I've been known to make a few purchases based solely on e-peen..... ;)

This is about it really these days. You have to reach 267blck before DDR3-1600 becomes the bottleneck of an overclock. And that is assuming that you can't overclock the memory at all.

Memory bandwidth isn't really a problem anymore. The only time you'll ever see an increase in performance is when doing synthetic benchmarking.

for p55 memory speed makes a difference
for x58 tightest timings @ 1600-1700mhz makes a difference
on x58 i run 1700mhz 6-6-6-20 24/7
on p55 i run 7-9-8-24 @ 2100mhz 24/7
maximus IV extreme @ 5.1 1.41v

evga e760 +920 4.8 water5.0+ on phase linx stable
gtx285 tri-sli
dfi ut-p35 lt
e8600@4.6 1.38v
too much ram

I ran my G.Skill Tridents at 1600 10-10-10-27 due to my CPU's memory controller sucking hard, and when I had them at their rated 2000 9-9-9-24, I noticed not a single bit of difference in day to day use, even in gaming. Anything really over 1600 is for benchmark numbers, or like me where the G.Skill Trident 2000's were cheaper than almost everything else.
