I had a very similar issue with a Gigabyte X58 board (purchased from a bad member here). Turned out the board was DOA. Took me 2 RMA's (and thus about $70 worth of shipping, plus the time) without the help of the origonal owner to get it fixed. I'll not buy another Gigabyte board again. If reseating doesnt fix it, see if you can find someone with a board to put the chip/ram into, I'll put money it detects all 6 gigs. Google it, this 4(6) problem seems to be VERY common among Gigabyte X58 boards.

The other possibility is a bad memory controller on the chip. My friend had this happen to him. RMA'd the chip to intel, they verified and sent him a new one. Either way, a board swap will verify if its the mobo or memory controller/CPU.

Cool, glad it worked. x58 is picky about how ram and cpu are seated, if it is not perfect it gives problems.

I just started having similar issues on an X58A-UD3R. CPU-Z and Windows detect all 9GB however it says only 3GB is usable.
