Default clarification on 3 channel and Dual channel

I am a tad confused on dual channel and 3 channel ram.
I read that 3 channel is just 3 indentical ram sticks. Is this true?
Now what I did is buy a Gigabyte EX58 UD5 motherboard with F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ 2x2g kit Dual channel.

If I was 2 buy 2 more kits would that make 2x3 channel kits?

Thanks,

dante1

Triple channel memory is 3x1GB, 3x2GB, 6x1GB, 6x2GB, etc... You need three or six sticks of identical RAM. As for three dual channel kits, you can use them to form two sets of triple channel memory kits, as the memory sticks themselves are identical, just packaged differently for triple/dual channel kits.

the way I saw it is that he wants to get 4 more on the 2 that he has so he would have 6 which would be 2 sets of triple channel

Depending on your board, you might be able to run 8GB (so 4x2GB) in triple channel too. My P6TD supports such configuration, just check your manual to see what it says for which RAM slots to use for certain setups. It would save you from having to buy 2x2x2GB kits, unless you absolutely need 12GB of RAM for some profound reason.
