Default Penryn 45nm= +40% Core2 Extreme in gaming

STOP THE MADDNESS!!
OMG I keep having to convince myself I don't need a faster/multicore processor right now as I drool all over the am2 x2 prices. (my monitor needs a wash)

Maybe I should be saving up for when these show... I could do... 200 posts a day :)

Intel Corp.'s Penryn processors will push desktop PCs to run 40 percent faster for gaming than the latest Intel Core 2 Extreme chip, a company executive said Monday, giving details on the new chip design planned to reach markets in the second half of 2007.

lol, actually, I just updated this system last fall. I went from a semprOn 2400+, 9550gpu.
I am not what would be considered a 'cutting edge' consumer.
This system will last me for a while :)

Congrats on your new one btw.

Just bear in mind that the 40% result was by using Half-Life 2. Consider the fact that Half-Life 2 will not utilize extra cores. Consider also that Half-Life 2 is incredibly sensitive to extra CPU/FSB power.

Compare the differences between the two processors used:

QX6800 2.93GHz 1066MHz FSB
Penryn 3.33GHz 1333MHz FSB

That's a 14% increase in CPU frequency and 20% increase in FSB. It would be more accurate in my opinion, to have equally clocked processors. I am guessing if the QX6800 was overclocked to match the Penryn, the results would be more than lackluster (although there -should- be gains somewhere). The real gains we will see is when games take advantage of SSE4.

Yes, very good points. You are more than likely correct, of course the cpu producers are both trying to brag right now.
They are actually shooting themselves in the foot. Anybody thinking about an upgrade soon might just hold of a purchase to wait and see.

I am just hoping the dual core prices will fall through the floor when these arive :)
