Happened to see a TV commercial for newegg .ca tonight on the comedy channel.
They are obviously throwing out some heavy advertising.

I'm horribly late to hop in the thread so I read everything from start to end and here's my own comments :

-I also got the beta preview email so I looked around and I'm not impressed as well.
-They charge PST and GST on everything, deal killer for me there.
-UPS only, deal killer as well.
-Pricing is so-so and if it's cheaper by chance, I can always pricematch it with NCIX.

About the brokerage fees, since UPS let the possibility for you to brokerage the package yourself with Canada Customs or use a third-party brokerage agence, I guess newegg set up their own agency to deal with those packages and pad the prices with the brokerage fees (much much cheaper than UPS rape fees).

More variety is nice, but UPS is a real deal breaker.
Use Ebay a lot and was burnt by UPS extra charges on delivery. So no cross border UPS for me.

It's just part of the PageRank system. Newegg.com has a high PageRank for the keyword Newegg, obviously. However, Google throws in some geotargeting as well, which is why as a Canadian, Newegg.ca ranks higher.

Ever wonder why when you search for products on Google, NCIX is usually the highest up there, instead of some random US company?

Okay, I am going to stab the next person who says they charge brokerage. Do you really think Newegg would be so stupid as to decide to ship UPS only as a CANADIAN-ONLY seller, only to rape people with additional brokerage fees?

There are many companies who ship through the US to Canada via UPS who do not charge brokerage even on their Standard service.
  1. UPS charges brokerage only on UPS Standard for shipments from the US to Canada. Some might also ship from the US to a depot in Canada, from where they will do another shipment. This avoids any fees.
  2. Some companies have deals with UPS which allow the brokerage fee to be waived (or pre-included) for cross-border shipments. Some other companies ship anything except UPS Standard (ie. B&H Photo Video, they only ship UPS Worldwide Express and Worldwide Saver).
  3. You can clear your own packages for the companies who do not offer this, it takes 15 minutes (edit: well, okay, maybe not 15 minutes depending on where you live; good thing CBS and UPS are 5 mins apart in Montreal ).
As for the pricing, yeah, it's awful, but I have a feeling things are going to start evening out over the next month or two. Newegg.ca is basically Newegg.com with some forex happening on the prices automatically. The major deal killer for me is the PST & GST though.

I'm pretty sure the system is set up such that your delivery will appear to have come from inside Canada with no brokerage or custom fees. I'm guessing, but seems like that might be why it took them so long to get set up.

@S_G
Seems Newegg pays the Canadian government the taxes due. This would stop UPS from charging fees to do the same.
Live very close to ncix , so always pickup.

I spent some considerable time on their site over the holiday and i gotta say for as much negative talk on this board.....Newegg's pricing is actually pretty competitive on alot of stuff and the $15 promo they are offering basically covers my shipping. I like the daily deals section.

BTW, if your willing to do you homework..pricing on Newegg.ca is the same as it is on Newegg.com..its just the conversion rate that makes it look different.

Anyways.....I like the competition...better for me

I'll admit to only doing spot checks on items I'm interested in (or already own), but I've yet to see one price at newegg that impressed me.

Just off the top of my head tonight was Mushkin Ascent 2X 2G PC2 8500.... $175 at newegg, $166 Minus $20 MIR = $146 at NCIX. Add the 5% GST savings for folks in Ontario (I don't get that here in the maritimes because of everybody's favorite HST) and that adds up to a fairly substantial savings on a single item so the $15 doesn't amount to that much.

Don't get me wrong... I want newegg to be competitive. I'd like nothing better than to get better deals for my hardware fixes, but I'm just not seeing it yet, and I suspect that the CDN $s plummet will only make the difference even more than it currently is.

Pretty competitive? No way dude! That $ 15 promo deal is SMACK talk! I looked at an E8400 proc a day before they started that and the price was around C$ 181, which was a reasonable price (Not the cheapest!). They next day I looked again because I had received an email from Newegg regarding this promo.

So me thinks: Let's go look at that E8400 again and to my great surprise, IT NOW COSTS C$ 191 ??!?!?!?!

What kind of deal is this? As far as I'm concerned, Newegg sucks for most items except for AMD stuff. Their CPU/GPU's are mostly cheaper than other places. Oh, I almost forgot: There is the PST/GST....

For me: NCIX it is!
