Ya I heard about this on the radio. This is my favourite part. The world's fastest supercomputer is being used on Nuclear Weapons research o.O

Quote:
"The computer is a speed demon. It will allow us to solve tremendous problems," said Thomas D'Agostino, head of the National Nuclear Security Administration, which oversees nuclear weapons research and the warhead stockpile.

Yeah the Nuclear Weapons research kinda pissed me off....They should at least put it to good use for medical or environmental research.

If we suddenly see a killer entry in the F@H rankings I guess we know where it came from.

No, it probably doesn't have a decent video card... :P

Joking aside, the Riken MDGRAPE 3 also has broken the 1 petaflop barrier, but it doesn't qualify for the TOP500 list because it's not a general-purpose machine capable of running the LINPACK benchmark.

What's also impressive is while the current Top500 champion, Blue Gene/L, uses 130,000 processors, the MDGRAPE only uses 4808 processors (consists of 201 units of 24 custom MDGRAPE-3 chips). The Roadrunner uses a hybrid design with almost 6,912 AMD Opteron dual core processors and almost 12,960 IBM PowerXCell 8i CPUs.

Anyone want to guess when PC's are that fast? I'd say not too long.

Supercomputers use thousands of processors. The Roadrunner uses almost 20,000 processors.

Say for example that processor speed doubles every 2 years. It will take more than 25 years to reach that.

But there are also many other things to consider, like memory, bandwidth speed, etc. It will take at least another 10 years to get to that point, imo. Unless a big breakthrough in computing happens. Maybe a quantum computer .

Although I also doubt PCs will be as fast as this even in 25 years, if you read the article, you'd know that this supercomputer is 10 times faster than supercomputers of 2 years ago, so it's not that far of a stretch
