Yes, but can it do pop protocol so that we can use a real email addy?

My understanding is that W8 is not going to have the ability to download live mail as an outlook replacement. Looks like thunderbird is going to have a resurgance.

POP? It's pretty dated...at the very least you should be using IMAP by now.

Outlook 2013 appears to connect fine to my @outlook.com account. Not sure if that's what your after?

A downloadable email client not tied to a web service.

The team behind outlook.com is doing an "IAMA" on Reddit right now. Some interesting stuff being discussed:

The only reason to use imap is if you are planning on accessing emails through various systems. Otherwise pop3 is still widely used over imap

I actually hopped on this morning to give it a spin and the interface is pretty slick. It's substantially speedier than the current iteration of hotmail or live or whatever. A solid change as far as i'm concerned!

I'm curious to how this would work, I can sign into it with my Live account, which happens to be my gmail account. Can I send/receive mail here, if so with what email address? (I can log into outlook.com with my gmail and see I've gotten the "welcome email")
