I think they are pretty damn competitive now... Not so many years ago the top cards were much more than they currently are. eg an 8800 Ultra was $800 +

I paid $299 for my HD4870 in August of 2008.

A 4870 was pretty much top of the line for non-dualGPU cards at the time wasn't it? That's actually not all that bad.

I wonder if AMD cards were really that over priced and price gouging or if they were able to cut costs drastically for other reasons. They've shaved over $100 off a card that was released less than 6 months ago. Of course, I really doubt this won't cause a small dip in nvidia prices, even though AMD has tried to price some cards to avoid a price war.

Well.... their vid profits have had to take up the slack for what's gotta be abysmal sales numbers for their processor line, so I'm sure they'd be padding the bottom line on vid cards if they can.

AMD has been doing well in the laptop market though, sure their desktop processors and even server processors kinda suck but the APU is attractive to people looking for cheap laptops. I am looking at an A10 ultra slim or whatever they are calling it. Offers similar gaming performance in many games at a much lower cost than SB or IB (apparently also uses less power too). AMD would have made money last quarter if not for the global foundries dump.

And contrary to most people's view in the enthusiast community, the bulldozer line sold much better than people would like to say.
