Default With Samsung, T.Vs Get Smart

“Hi, TV!”

With that simple command, Samsung’s new ES-8000 becomes attentive, listening and watching for its master’s next move.

“Volume, up.”

The television immediately obeys, turning the volume up a notch.

Something I should also note, the Samsung rep I spoke with was pretty insistent that they would (in the future) have their SDK open to 3rd party developers and not have an Apple-esque final say on the code. The possibilities for Adult entertainment are endless.....

If indeed they release an SDK, this would make it easy to offer support for every single language out there. Not bad! :)

I tried this feature out in a fairly noisy Fry's Electronics TV section and it still understood the commands pretty well. That being said, it does come off as pretty gimmicky. The price premium for the feature seemed to amount to a few hundred dollars over non "Smart" models. I do have to hand it to Samsung for a very sleek and visually appealing TV though from its thin bezel to the cool stand.

After using it for a few days now, I can say definitively: GIMMICK!

Not only are the commands seriously limited but I found the damn TV had turned itself on at random intervals too. It was probably picking up upon random conversation.

It heard you talking crap about it and decided to haunt you... Skynet: 1. SKYMTL: 0.

Who says "Hi, TV." anyway? It'd be way better suited to pick up a user defined command. For example, "Make it so, Number 1" or something Knight Rider themed. Hopefully their promised open SDK will bring something like that.

Edit: Oh man, I double-posted on myself.

I thought this would happen as well. Does it pick up dialogue in movies/tv shows/video games?

Or better yet, what if you're watching a home movie? I hope that it has some way of shutting off that part somehow, because even if it's tuned to your voice, if a home movie happens to be on, you could still be screwed.

Better yet, I have all these TV remotes I barely use because the digital converter box remote is required for most functions. I have a separate audio system that uses optical, etc.

What I would like to see (perhaps) is a Logitech Harmony remote that had this capability so that I could control multiple devices.
