Less than twenty four hours after a number of websites turned off their lights to protest the American Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the FBI has shutdown digital storage locker MegaUpload and arrested its owner Kim “Kim DotCom” Schmitz on charges of piracy and conspiracy.

For a site that is all user uploads of files that can be anything from text documents to pictures.. USER UPLOADS, not uploaded by the owner... this is ridiculous


Phone companies have serveral murders/drug deals, etc planned through their phone network, cars are constantly used for getaways/transportation to and from crimes. Guns are used to kill people illegally. Cameras are used for child pornography. Shoes are worn by criminals. But a website that had users upload copyrighted files to it gets shut down and the owner arrested?

By this logic, we should just ban everything! And arrest everyone!

This is the future of the internet, a sad sad future.

And yes this is all because of laws that are in the US and the governments of the world just roll over and help them and arrest people. These are people that are not US citizens and do not live there, yet they are getting charged by the FBI, a US government agency.

This will only get worse if SOPA and the Protect IP act get passed. It will truly be the end of the user generated internet. You want to post your wedding video showing your first dance? I don't think so, that song in the background is most likely copyrighted and therefore you will be subject to getting your video taken down and even possibly criminal charges.

So very disgusting.
