Nvidia is far from being a stupid company, do you think they'd release a card that just sucked donkey and made it cost an unattainable amount?

They have 3rd party vendors to consdier as well. XFX, PNY, etc they dont want some card that isnt going to sell. They are in the business of making money not making paperweights.

- and given the cat 8.3 debacle, nvidia's looking goood to me right now.

It will sell, lets not kid ourselves. Just as the ultra sells for no discernible reason, it will sell. That said, either they have found a way to achieve 100% scaling, or this thing will fail. That said, the point of diminishing returns is $180, so it doesn't make much sense, even if it does

Well one guy off of tomshardware forum said he pre-ordered it and it was a bit more expensive then the 3870 X2. But I highly doubt he actually pre-ordered it.
