Default Intel Six-Core CPU in 2008

Quote:
Vienna (Austria) – Intel's PR reps are recovering this week from GDC and are preparing for CeBit, which will open its doors next week. But there is a certain presentation about a relatively unknown part, which may keep Intel’s phones ringing this week: Leaked information indicates that Intel’s first hexa-core will debut this year.
TG Daily - Intel six-core coming in 2008

This is interesting to say the least...

Read that the other day myself. They sure don't like to make it easy to decide on what you want to wait for when doing a new build. Take your chances I gues in that your machine won't be obsolete by the time you finish building it.

This 6 core is a server CPU. The Desktop probably won't be seen this year.

Its like how AMD released some of their opterons on s939 which wasn't a server socket. It made it so you could buy a cheap server. The socket 771s can be thrown into a normal s775 board, usually.

But 604 is their high end xeon socket for big servers.

EDIT: sorry, let me reword. 604 is being used because its a majority over 771. I am sure 771s will follow.
