Default Nintendo?s New Wii U Console Powered by AMD Radeon

AMD put out a press release last night confirming rumors that they are making the GPU for Nintendo?s new Wii U console. To many this was largely expected since ATI, which is now owned by AMD, collaborated with Nintendo on developing a GPU for the Gamecube and the first generation Wii. The press release was rather short on technical details, only st... [ Read full article ]

You think Nintendo would just buy a CPu from AMD as well and get a two for one discount.

Default Age doesn't matter

They need a certain chipset with a specific envelope for heat and power consumption. It's a whole lot eaiser to tweak a 3 year old (proven) process and die shrink it, and then add a bunch of Nintendo-specific extensions.
There is no reason for it to do full 1080p, 720p is enough. Not much horsepower is required.

Backwards compatibility. Getting a IBM Power based processor makes Wii emulation/virtualization simple. All they do is disable all but 1 core, underclock it, limit the ram and BAM, you have a Wii.

The Wii did the same thing, it would just underclock itself and limit the amount of ram to essentially become a Gamecube.

Aside from the fact that this is 2011. Of course there's a reason for it to do full 1080p. Hell, the large majority of PS3 and 360 games don't run natively in 1080p. But the option is still there for developers stupid/ballsy enough to attempt it.
