Default Intel to Challenge iPad, Macbook Air Dominance with "Ultrabook" Notebook Category

Concerned by an expanding tablet market that has eroded the conventional laptop market, Intel unveiled a new category of notebook today, dubbed the "Ultrabook", at Computex which combines the portability of tablets with the performance of a conventional notebook.

According to the specifications established by Intel Ultrabooks will be notebooks that...

Interesting indeed but they NEED proper battery life (ie: above 5 hours). If they don't they'll be absolutely useless IMO. I'm totally fed up with seeing modern notebooks sporting the exact same 3-4 hours battery life of my four year old Dell.

My Sony VAIO Z series laptop has an 6-8 hour battery, thin and light, and its an i7 mobile CPU and nVidia(Hybird w/Intel) GPU. So laptops DO exist out there today that do what you want, they just tend to be expensive.

Anyways all my point is, the issue has little to do with Intel, laptops exist today, and have for years that have great performance, thin, and "stylish" even. The problem is the laptop manufactures seem to take these ultra portables and price them out of most peoples price range, and then they'll take that model, cut it down and ruin the battery life and performnce for the "cheap version" that's never really better than every other laptop on the market.

Not sure how you get 6-8 hours. I've got a Vaio Z with the i5 540 and dual SSDs and when using WiFi + Word or browsing the Internet, I'm lucky to get 5 hours at 75% screen brightness on Win 7 x64. Still, with the extended battery I get a good 10 hours.

But still, I do agree there are laptops out there with the battery life but they are literally all over the $1200 mark.

And if they are at a lower price then the performance suffers.

I have fairly light sensitive eyes so I can and do almost always use it at the lowest brightness setting unless its plugged in or unless I have to turn it up(due to lighting conditions, glare, etc,). Even when I do turn it up, or have it plugged in I rarely put it past 50% unless I'm in a REALLY sunny room.

That's what most likely makes up the difference between your battery life experience and mine.

Hell, even my Dell 30" for my desktop, I always keep at the lowest brightness setting, higher settings hurt my eyes.

OT: On a slightly off-topic note, how do you feel about the added bulge and weight of the extended battery, I've been thinking of getting another battery but was worried that the bulge might bother me. Other thing being the weight, worried that it might give it a weird weight profile when handling it.
