I just noticed that as well. Anyone know why? I never noticed it at work when I upgraded today.

Same problem here. Feels like I'm going blind if I turn hw acceleration on.

So here is a fix:
[How To] Fix bad fonts in Firefox 4 Beta 5 Manas T

  • go to the address bar and type about:config
  • Search for the property gfx.direct2d.disabled
  • Double click on it to set it to True.

Now the issue I have with this is it disables the hardware acceleration (at least from my understanding) and is that not one of the main bonuses for faster browsing?

I'm sorry, can someone clarify? I don't see the problem, I can read both fonts just fine.

Well the thing is you have to have a card that is capable of hardware acceleration. Thing is I don't remember seeing any difference at work either and I'm not sure if either of the cards I have in that machine would support hardware acceleration, which would explain why I did not see a difference.

What GPU do you have?

I have also noticed the font problem, and there is no real fix as of yet. Hopefully soon..

But yes, it is much faster, even on already fast machines!

You can switch the tabs back onto the bottom, so getting used to the UI is easy.

A great tweak, since BarTab doesn't work right in FF4, is to type this into about:config

browser.sessionstore.max_concurrent_tabs

set to 0.

This will make it so your stored tabs won't load till you click on them, so if you're like me and keep 30 tabs open, when you load up firefox, it won't take forever also if you don't use them for a while it will take them off your RAM.

Still looking for a nice black theme, since the NASA night launch is incompatible.

So far I like. Granted that they fix the font problem, this is a sweet browser that is back in the times with chrome.

I love how just a week before firefox 4 comes out, Tom's hardware releases an article comparing the main web browsers... Sure they mentioned something about not waiting specifically for firefox 4 and some other fancy words I skimmed over, but it's completely ridiculous to review web browsers when such a major release was so close! I bet you firefox 4 would have really shaken up the results...
