I was just going to mention that. Good luck with Cloud computing...one "glitch" and the clouds will be clear for a blue sky.

Jokes aside, I lost 5 years of information that pertained to either purchases or friendly correspondence. I don't think Microsoft can do anything about it.

It is advised that at least once in a while, you download your emails to your computer. I don't know about Hotmail, but Yahoo and Gmail have POP support, which will allow you to download your stuff to your personal computer via client such as Thunderbird. You could even have Yahoo/Gmail download and copy email from the other.

I have been following this for someone I know and the PR on this one is terrible. I think the fact that it happened over the holidays makes the response much slower, but thats no excuse, even for a free service IMO.

Edit: Looks like some folks are getting their emails back now.

That's exactly what I was hoping for.

Now I know a lot of people were upset about losing everything, but if you were storing EVERYTHING on a FREE EMAIL SERVICE, you know that's just asking for it. You may expect them to always have it up and that it's their job to keep the service going as smoothly as possible, but it's still a free service.

Backing stuff up should very well be engraved in people's minds by now, it's not 1990 anymore. I'm surprised at the amount of people who put all of their faith in Hotmail not failing one day.

(And for everyone using Hotmail AS their backup, shame on you).

Two days ago I was worried about backing up GMail as well as all my passwords. I found out that you can set GMail (Settings) to forward all files (except spam) to a standard local email like Thunderbird. Then back up your email files either with back up programs or just copy the files to an external drive, USB drive or burn to CD.

I'd assume Hotmail has a similar mail forwarding function.

I'm using Windows live mail with all my mail accounts, and I can back up my emails on a windows exchange format or windows live mail. My back up is done now hehe
