40nm isn't an architecture, it refers to the manufacturing process. According to the rumours, ATI's next GPU series will use the same process but with parts of their next-generation architecture thrown in since they aren't able to actually manufacture it yet.

It's fine. Following their trend, they'll have 2 series of each fabrication. 3000 + 4000, then 5000 + 6000. Next will be 7000 + 8000. According to what I was able to get from googling Radeon 6000 news, Southern Islands is supposed to be a stepping stone from Evergreen to Northern Islands (Radeon HD 7000). Southern Islands will be based off of Evergreen, but incorporate a few new features which they plan to have in Northern Islands. Then again, these are all just rumors, so who knows?

I hope that they won't have to redesign everything and lose performance because they have to stay with 40nm...

dont think the rumours are completely off. makes sense actually.

all i care is performance vs power figures vs pricing. if they can balance it properly? more competition to nv will probably equate better stuff for us.
