as long as it performs, who cares about the box?

Considering the cost of packaging gets factored in to the price in many cases... I care

A thousand hundos really people?? I smell gimmic all over this one. I mean isn't 4GB's slight overkill? lol don't get me wrong, I like overkill, but not for 3 quarters of the cost of my current rig.

Actually FiXT is joking there, this card doesnt have 6 outputs AFAIK.

BUT, its not 4gb... its 2x2gb (as in 2gb per core) with each core matching or exceeding the clocks of a regular 5870.

Basically, this card would be TWO 5870 2Gbs (which aren't even availble yet) for the cost of less than two (two 2Gb 5870's are supposedly going to be about 450 US = 500+ CAD each).

I'd say the price is fair in that regard.

Whatever happened to that technology ATI was developing where both GPUs can share data and textures in the memory? Wasn't it called DisplayLink or something? I think it was supposed to be introduced with the 3870X2 but was cut short, which is why the 3870X2 didn't perform as well as it could have.

I know that they use the PLX controller to do Crossfire, but even with Crossfire they don't share textures and data.

It was called sideport, was supposed to make the 4870x2 be faster than a GTX295, never happened...

Sorry for quoting myself: More info on the same.

The original idea for sideport was to get around the bandwidth limitation of the Pci-express 1.1 controller they were using in between the two GPUs. It seems that the 5970s are using a far newer pci-express 2.0 one, with a great deal of bandwidth too! It's a chip by PLX.

More info: PLX Technology : PCI Gen 2 Express Switches : PEX 8647
