the faster they come the better it will be. I also hope to see if they can release mainstream real 8 core ( no HT ) for every one. That would be a great punch in intel face.

...... and you think Intel have nothing to fight back

look at a comment about it :

.........Some website did a review comparing phenom 2 X4 and X6 at 2.6 GHz recently and the Phenom X6 is going to barely beat out the lowest core i7’s

.....Get your act together AMD or you will be struggling against VIA and making low end netbook CPU’s.

And I suppose you have buy one:P I really need to find some money to buy more memory if I want you to stay behind in the ranking.

I finally upgraded to a quad core and now the x6 cores are coming out. Hmmm... tempting. Wonder if they will actually be socket AM3.

I think everything is AM3 until (possibly) bulldozer (not sure what is happening with sockets then).

These will use AM3, because they're basically just Deneb dies with an extra two cores shoehorned into them. Bulldozer will require a new socket because it's an entirely ground-up architecture that is significantly different from AMD"s current CPUs. It will also most likely use an LGA socket.

I have no doubt that for low-end and mid-end setups, AMD's processors offer better performance per dollar even though that's achieved in a much less efficient way than Intel. However, I sure hope the new Bulldozer architecture will put AMD back on the map to compete at the high-end as well.

More than 50% of my household machines are AMD but I keep having to go with Intel for my "flagship" machine...and I'm not an Intel fanboy.

Agreed (though I don't have that many computers...just one home computer and a laptop).

I heard from an AMD rep that apparently 8 core processors will be coming out soon too.

I wouldn't bet on seeing any retail 8-core AMD CPUs on their current manufacturing process. That would be at least a year out if it's even on the roadmap altogether (and by that time hopefully Bulldozer will be out anyway).

Default wondering

How good will these new hexcore processors even be for gaming? Are games even using 4 cores these days?

I've got a 550 unlocked and oc'ed to 3.4ghz, but I sure miss having a temp sensor. It also doesn't go any higher than 3.4ghz. I've been thinking about going for a 965 but now that these are on their way I might just have to wait.

They won't be any better for gaming than quads are for the most part. There are a number of games that can use four cores, but few of them actually need that much power and the vast majority will run fine on a dual-core CPU. Although for other reasons, I would recommend a quad-core CPU or more for a high-end build.
