Wow, you really need to read more and google more. Before you make statements like this.

If you had enough USB 3.0 ports on your laptop, couldn't you buy an external "graphics" card for it.

The technique of porting video out via USB has been tried already. The release of USB 3.0 makes this more practical.

What some of the other posters don't get is that DisplayLink is not designed to super seed DVI, HDMI or analog 15 pin d-sub output formats. It's the convenience of using a port that is ubiquitous throughout the entire PC universe.

Ever hook up a laptop to a conference room projector only to find that you have a HDMI out laptop and the projector only takes D-15 input video? <insert any other IN-compatibility story here>

I once hooked up an after market video port replicator that used DisplayLink style technology via USB 2.0. it was gawd awful to look at; and even worse to use. This could spawn a new generation of universal video port replicators and laptop docking stations that hookup via USB 3.0 and offer multi monitor support. Kinda wicked if you ask me.

Yeah this thread got silly comparing speeds and such. Its ease of use that is the sell here.

Yes it is Chris, some people out on the web state that its faster but real world speeds are unknown till we see it in action at CES.

You are correct though, the world of computers needs to move to 1 universal connection type for everything. Will make it simpler in the long run.

+1 bazillion.

USB keyboard, mouse, sound and video output.

Done, have a good day.

My mess of cables would shrink by alot and it would look better to boot.
