Default Pitiful TSMC 40nm Chip Yeilds to Continue Through 2010

The dire situation over at the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) in their production of 40nm chips has been evident since the launch of the ATI 5800 series graphics card, and unfortunately reports indicate it is unlikely to be resolved any time soon. A report from Fudzilla indicates that the situation over the yields of 40nm produc... [ Read full article ]

Currently ATI is the only company relying on 40nm chips for a retail product (5800 series), however NVIDIA is rumoured to be launching their Fermi based graphics cards in early 2010 as well; placing even more strain on the clearly over burdened manufacturing sector.
Um, aren't all the new ATI and NVIDIA GPUs using the 40nm processes? It's not only the ATI 5800 series that's on 40nm.

Guess there's going to be more shortages for both ATI and NVIDIA. We seriously need another semiconductor fab. Hope Global Foundaries can get it up and running soon.

I was hoping for Fermi this winter. At this rate, I'll be lucky to see Fermi by next winter.

I'm sadfaced by crappy 40nm yields. Still looking to pick up an XFX 5850. =\

Yes, but Fermi is not a retail product atm. ATI is currently the only one with a heavy reliance on the 40nm process. When NVIDIA begins/ramps up production of Fermi (I believe March of 2010) we will likely see and even BIGGER shortage of both cards if the situation isn't solved.

I did update the post to reflect that ATI isn't eating up 100% of the production as NVIDIA do have a few 40nm products available (lower end GT cards)

Thanks for the double check

I think it goes without saying that they DID screw themselves with their 40nm.
Wouldnt be surprised to see companies giving them a wider birth next time. Or at the very least not putting all the eggs in a TSMC basket ;)

Some of my sources are claiming NVIDIA has signed a contract with TSMC for 80% of their 40nm yield starting in January 2010. That would mesh nicely with the rumors claiming Jen Hsun was at TSMC a few months ago reading them the riot act.
