Default Intel denies that the i7 920 will be discontinued in the forseeable future

bit-tech.net | Intel Answers: The future of Core i7 920

So much for my idea of having an exclusive i7 920 owners club.

Eliminating the 920 would be a bad move for income. I'll probably end up upgrading from my 3000+ Venice to it eventually. ;)

If the discontinued it, there would be a MASSIVE run on the processors because people will realize what Intel may be trying to do: discontinue the 920 due to the fact that the higher-end i5 processors may perform similarly yet will be priced higher.

Ah, I didn't know the i5s would pass entry i7 cost. I thought that the i5 was supposed to replace the Q9s and maybe the Q8s later on.

No, it won't pass entry i7 cost according to some sites. Why? Because according to those sites, the 920 won't be around anymore.

Was browsing forums to try to find a date for i7 discontinuation and stumbled across this forum. The i5s at top end are said to be of comperable performance to the entry i7s. I disagree, but the top end i5s that are close to the entry i7s in performance will cost more than the 920 does now (currently priced around $289).

Personal opinion, the i5s can't perform up to what a 920 can, especially if you are clocking your cpu. If you are looking to get a new processor, I would suggest you go for the 290 instead of waiting and settling for a higher priced i5
