Default ASUS Designs Own Monster Dual-GTX 285 4 GB Graphics Card

GTX295 Special Edition...Dual 8-pin PCI-E Power, 2GB per gpu...

Quote:
ASUS has just designed a new monster graphics card that breaks the mold for reference design GeForce GTX 295, called the ASUS MARS 295 Limited Edition. The card, although retains the name "GeForce GTX 295", same device ID, and is compatible with existing NVIDIA drivers, has two huge innovations put in by ASUS, which go far beyond being yet another overclocked GeForce GTX 295: the company used two G200-350-B3 graphics processors, the same ones that make the GeForce GTX 285. The GPUs have all the 240 shader processors enabled, and also have the complete 512-bit GDDR3 memory interface enabled. This dual-PCB monstrosity holds 32 memory chips, and 4 GB of total memory (each GPU accesses 2 GB of it). Apart from these, each GPU system uses the same exact clock speeds as the GeForce GTX 285: 648/1476/2400 MHz (core/shader/memory).
Pics of the card can be found on the source site, TechPowerUp, HERE

Wow what a monster!! 4Gbs of ram though a touch overkill?

Good fine nonetheless Cadaveca, my gripe(s) if this thing goes into full production is:

1. Stupidly Asus exspensive
2. No lifetime Warranty

3. No official drivers from Nvidia to support it.

Mouth-watering if true, but the 1000 unit limit is disappointing.

The driver support shouldn't be a big deal, since it may just be viewed as GTX 285 SLI.

The article mentions that the card is identified as a normal GTX295, by drivers, avoiding and issues. I think they'll be stress-testing to ensure the card lasts longer than 6 months, and if it passes, they'll release it, and if not, maybe they'll put blocks on 'em and ship 'em ready-for-water.

When it comes to games like GTA4...you need that power. And it's not like GTA4's engine is bad...it's jsut that it's capable of so much, and we haven't even seen everything it can do yet. After playing both GTA4, and the new MidnightClub, which both use the same engine, I'm very eager to see other titles take advantage of this tech.

So while I agree that it's totally overkill for 99% of real-world uses, the few times that power is really needed, two of these cards would come in handy...4xGTX285 SLi, 8GB of framebuffer......and it's gonna be at what I'd consider a decent cost. If it comes out, I'll buy one, for sure.

If I can afford at the time I'll buy one simply because I agree with your statement about GTA4. I was kind of dissappointed given my system limitations when I started to adjust things, eventually I had to just back off the resolution get the settings I wanted. Infact its the first game I have had to lower the resolution to have maximum settings. I must agree its nice to see some titles starting to use all that memory put on these cards.

It will be interesting what kind of thermal limitations this thing might present. With such a limited amount you can't have these things dropping like flys down the road.

Isn't H20 always the better way for dual GPU solutions. It will make it a very pricey card though if shipped "ready for water"

MAn, I'd love to have a couple of those, but I doubt there will be waterblocks.

A bit too out of my price range to get custom, one-off blocks!

Talk about getting divorce papers served
