Default Sub-Zero HD 2900XT destroys 3DMark 05 record

How'dya like them apples........ now how about 3DMark06??

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that enthusiast Marcus Hultin (alias Kinc) of NordicHardware.com used the ATI Radeon™ HD 2900 XT GPU to successfully set a new single card record in Futuremark 3DMarkŪ05, with a score of 30,092. Hultin's system was operating an ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT tuned to 1144 MHz engine clock and 999 MHz memory clock at a temperature below freezing. This leaves the previous top 3DMark 05 single card record of 29,686 in the dust.

Heh......

Is that going to be AMD/ATI's super secret to propel them back into the top spot????? (Their gear works well up in the arctic.... :) ).

Joking aside.... for the high end enthusiasts, getting around cold lock issues would be a bonus.... there are folks out there who would invest in high end refrig gear if it provided a big boost. (Not me for sure..... :) ).

What do you think a decent WC setup would do for them?

Everything aside- there's value in holding bench crown regardless of the means.

That would depend on how good the stock cooling is. I've never been big on OC'ing vid cards (I don't game that much, and it seems like more of a pain than what the gain is) so I'm not sure what kind of benefits lower temps normally give to vid cards.

well apparently the 2900xt is succeptable to penryn-style current leakage which limits the stock speeds indirectly, so it was fully expected to be an excellent overclocker under extreme cooling conditions. Most people do play games, and 99% of the time, the system is pushed to it's fullest when gaming as most people don't generally run other applications that demand as much. I know that I gained very significant performance gains in gaming by overclocking my GPU (and it was really very easy)

The CoolIt Freezone has a version that includes a GPU heatsink...so if you're willing to pay $500. you can achieve some very low temps as long as you are aware of the condensation issues
However, I don't know if their heatsink is compatable with the 2900 and if its capable of cooling a 2900 for a great bench I would still rather use an 8800 and see what I could get from it lol

If I was in the market for a video card right now, I'd go for the 2900xt- just because it's more interesting to be on the fringe ;-)
