My System Specs

Default GTX 680 SLI and the HX850

Given the my system specs and the estimated psu calculation would my 3 year old HX850 still be good enough to power an extra GTX 680 on top of everything else I have in my rig. I know the 680 is quite efficient and lots others say even a good 750 watt PSU is good enough for SLIed 680's but given all the hard drives, fans, and the highly overclocked 920 I own would my 3 year old HX850 still be viable?

System Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58-E WS
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 D0 @ 4.01ghz
Memory: 24Gb (3x8gb) Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz RAM
Video Card: EVGA geForce GTX 680 SC
Hard Drive # 1: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Hard Drive # 2: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Hard Drive # 3: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (Raid 0)
Hard Drive # 4: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (Raid 0)
Optical Drive: LG BH12LS38
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932
Power Supply: Corsair HX850 (3 years old)
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Recon3D PCIe

I can't remember if the 680s use less power then the 580s, but when I ran sli on 580s I could not run them and my CPU overclocked on a 850W power supply as I would end up pulling too much, cause video drivers to fail/crash and sort of get a soft crash. Seeing as you're using a more power hungry processor then what I'm using (2600k) I'd be very wary of running the 680s above stock.

680 uses about 80W~ less per card on load compared to 580's.

One more question, assuming I slotted in another GTX 680 this year and next year If I were to swap the 920/X58 platfrom for LGA 2011/3930k + upgrade the H100 to a custom cooling loop would that warrant a PSU upgrade when I move to LGA 2011

Ok I will keep that in mind Arinoth. I do not plan on overclocking the GPU's however, the slight increase in FPS doesn't really justify the extra power draw or fan noise in my opinion

It would likely still handle it, but with that much invested in a computer I wouldn't keep going with your current PSU after a cpu upgrade as will. If you are running 2011 and SLI 680 I would start thinking about a 1000w PSU, unless you are running it all at factory clocks...at factory clocks on all of it I would be more likely to keep the 850w.

If your main plan is upgrade upgrade, grab the AX1200i and forget about getting another PSU for 7 years :)

You'll still be fine. Kepler is ridiculously efficient.
