what's the problem...

I currently have a cooler master silent pro m1000 which is a 1000W/80A/80PLUS Bronze psu and it seems it does not handle highly oc'd gtx480 in sli so im thinking about buying another psu. So here's the problem, i don't know which psu to buy: should I go for a 1200w+ ? or should i just simply find a better quality 1000w psu (even though i thought the CM silent pro line was a good quality psu's...)

i dont seem to scale an oc'd gtx480 power. my oc goal is : 900c,2000m. Some people got the memclock even further with a core voltage of 1.125/1.138v (1.050v base)

specs:
amd phenom II x4 965 oc'd @ 4ghz
2x evga gtx480 SLi
msi nf750-g55 mobo
8gb ddr3 ram
500gb hdd
pump+quad-rad (120mm x4)

Btw, i do have a bottleneck with my current cpu but i intend to upgrade when haswell comes out...

So which psu do you recommend me? If the psu i currently have is well enough, whats the problem then ? PLease help it's been 2days iv been just looking through reviews and reading articles but still don't know what to do... -_-

The CM Silent Pro wasn't the best unit out there.
Now when you say it can't handle it, what do you mean? Do you start gaming and have the rig shut down?


As for Other units to buy in place of that one which are much better , the Corsair AX1200i would probaby be the Best PSU you can purchase to date. If you are willing to spend the money.
If there was any unit I would want powering my stuff, its that one.

Just looking at the power numbers between my previous 560ti SLI setup and the stock 480 from the original review here has me wondering about a 1K PSU for your current setup.

I was pulling over 600W (as reported by my UPS) with my current 920 OC + 2 560ti OC cards (stock OC). Looking at the 480 power numbers, I'd expect a pair of them would add an extra 75W / card so at least an extra 150W which puts you into 750W+ draw under full draw (when I say full draw, I mean 100% FAH both GPU and CPU) which to me doesn't leave a lot of overhead on even a good 1K unit.

I know many folks here will say that I'm crazy to suggest that even a good 1K might be pushing the limit for a heavily OC'd 480 SLI setup, but I personally want as close to 50% overhead and 40% is my comfort zone.

yeah, whenever i oc, i run few benchs like unigine heaven 3.0 and after 1min, it crashes. I think the videocards got this firmware that re-initialize default setting to protect the cards when it's about to crash. Sometimes, during attempts, computer just freezes... The system does handle mid-overclocking though...

That sounds more like a Card issue to me, but its hard to say because I have seen power issues do things like that too.

I'm just hesitent to reccomend you get a new PSU when we are not to sure.
Though to be honest, you cannot go wrong with the AX1200i, it is the single best PSU on the market right now.
