Thumbs down Antec Earthwatts 500W Noisy
Has anyone had their Antec Earthwatts 500W go noisy on them? Is this a sign that my PSU is dying? The sound seems to be coming from the PSU fan. It's so loud it's not even funny. Smacking the back of the PSU seems to temporarily fix it, but that's it.

It was fine last night and relatively quiet, but now it sounds like a 6000RPM machine.

Try and measure the fan usually they're 80-90mm on the earth watts. If you don't have anymore warranty on it pull it appart and see if the connection for the fan is hardwired or just plugs into a header. However if you no longer have a warranty on it you may want to consider replacing it but that's just my preference.

Yeah its not the PSU itself, its gotta be the bearings in the fan going. That is usually indicated espically when hitting it allevates the noise.

They should have, 3 years I think for warranty. Send it in for RMA.

If not you might be able to get a 80mm to fit it, I don't think they are special fans in there so long as it can wire to the board correctly.

I should still have warranty for it, as it was bundled with the Antec Sonata 3. Turning off the computer than turning it back on, the noise is gone for maybe 5 minutes then it returns.

Uh what a bad timing for this to happen. Got 3 midterms this week and next Monday >.<

It's a 80mm fan. Why they chose 80mm... Who knows.

Saves costs, for the wattage of the unit its fine.
It has nothing to do with the size, the real question is what type of fan is in there.
Bad fan choices make for noisy PSU's.

Yea could probably be a defective fan that was installed and is failing early. I have the same problem with my Radeon 4890 fan on cold starts it rattles like crazy until it warms up. Here's some arctic cooling fans that are pretty cheap depends if you need 80mm or 92mm.

Also you say it's still under warranty and having to open the psu to replace the fan will probably void any warranty seals just to give you a heads up.

Well, the fan finally died. Now I have to spend a good hour to change PSUs...

That's an annoyance for sure, but its better than a dead PSU. Going to RMA, or rip it apart and try to replace it?
