My System Specs

Default Load question
I have an OCZ (yes...) ModXStream 500w that has survived pretty well so far, but I'm worrying about the long term.

The machine it sits in has a 5850 and a 6870 crunching numbers 24/7. Cpu is a G850 (1155) and idles most of the time. I'm estimating the load at a fairly constant ~350-375w.

Is 500w enough for this type of operation? I have been considering a 650w xfx power supply, but I'd have to shell out $80 before rebate...

One of these?

OCZ ModStream Power Supply *EOL - OCZ

I won't offer any suggestions other than a cautionary tale.... while I was quite pleased with my modstream 520W when I initially bought it (managed to power my finicky Ultra-D), and it's been around "the family" for quite a few years, just a couple of weeks ago it finally popped a cap and took out a P4 motherboard with it. Fortunately, it appears only the PSU and motherboard went so I was able to drop the 3.06 HT P4 + 1G ram into a Dell I picked up for cheap off of kijiji and my niece was back up and running with a small amount of fuss / money.

Just saying........... ;)

Ahhhhh... one of the new OCZ PSUs......

You're powering two PCIe vid cards with that under 24/7 load??? Betchya the exhaust's awfully hot, and that's never a good thing with a PSU, especially under 24/7 loads.

Personally, I wouldn't power anything other than a low(er) power onboard vid build with one of those.

Then XFX it is... I'll pick one of these (XFX 650W PRO650W Core Edition Single Rail ATX 12V 53A 24PIN ATX Power Supply 80PLUS Bronze PSU - XFX - P1650SNLB9) up.

Thanks for the input. I prefer to invest a little more than to eventually damage components.

If I'm not mistaken all XFX PSUs are seasonic so you can't go wrong.
