My personal preference from long experience is PC Power & Cooling. I don't know if the quality has changed since they became a part of OCZ (I bought my last supply just before the acquisition) but they have always been high quality. They do tend to be a bit pricey though.

Computer Power Supplies, ATX Power Supplies - PC Power & Cooling

Other decent options include Seasonic, Corsair, Antec (many models made by Seasonic)
Obsolescence is just a lack of imagination.
