Default Another P4 PSU Thread...

I have a tiny dillemma here, would appreciate some input

I have a 3GHz P4 (530J) on an intel D101GGC mobo, sorta newly rebuilt after i got a gateway machine with a dead psu and mobo. After scrubbing it down and replacing parts, i put in a temporary welfare psu (one of those that comes with cheap cases) and it works alright, a bit loud, but works.

However, I just got a 8600GT for cheap, thought I'd throw it into the P4 just to spice it up a bit. Psu is too weak (reallly weak amperage), not surprised. I happen to have a Enermax EG465PE v1.2 460W, with nice specs, BUT old 20pin ATX :( Also a bit dusty, would have to open it and de-dust it a bit (it has been sitting unused for years, pretty sure it has discharged)

Now, I can get a 20-24pin converter cable but thats $10 with tax... but not feeling too sure on this one, I could get an earthwatts 380W psu for fairly cheap too, but not really feeling like dumping too much cash into this random rig (btw the 8600 was not originally intended for this computer).

Hmmph

You can actually use a 20-pin connector in a 24-pin socket, and the Enermax should be fine.

yeah but aren't those extra 4 pins for extra juice to the pci-e slot? This 8600GT is bus powered, no 6pin at the back...

Only one of the pins is for extra +12V power. In any case, the 20-pin should be plenty for an 8600GT.

I would say give it a shot. I know there are many motherboards that will allow a 20 pin connection to its 24pin slot and still operate normally. I wouldn't be worried about the 8600gt, since it doesn't use much power. I would say worst case scenario it won't let you boot with a PCIE card installed. Worth a shot to keep an older rig up and going at no cost.
