Default OEM vs retail seasonic PSUs

Hey everyone. A question that may be very easy to answer if you know, but I couldn't find a real answer anywhere.

Are the retail and OEM Seasonic power supplies the same (other than the obvious lack of a power cable and color)? (ex ss-500 bronze vs s12II 500w vs s12II 520 bronze etc) Are they just a repackaged psu in a different color case and with slightly massaged specs, or are there actually internal differences (component quality, etc)??

I want to post something similar 1 hour ago, but I don't want to crap the tread at the time

But the OP ask a very good question, some OEM product differ from Retail one. and Zero is the guy we need to look at it, if he don't already know it . anyway I look forward to this question with great interest

There are some differences. Component choices, and the cheaper OEM models use lower-end platforms sometimes. Also, the S12II/M12II models have longer warranty coverage. However, the OEM models are still very good.

That's pretty much what I thought, so let me rephrase a similar question and add a new one.

1. If you were building a PC and were putting the PSU in a case where it would never be seen, would you spend the extra money to get a retail over the OEM, or save the $ and use the OEM? Why?

2. What about OEM fans? Are they noisier (run different RPM, or speed up earlier under load etc, or are the fans of a lower quality, etc)

Thanks again everyone

1) Depends on your budget. If you're trying to save money, go with one of the OEM models. I have an SS-400ET running in another rig and it's a perfectly good PSU.

2) The fan controllers are probably configured to favour lower temperatures rather than low noise, but they are still very quiet.

Newegg and NCIX both sell a few models, and there are probably plenty of other retailers who do as well.

Thanks again. I just started wondering about these PSUs and couldn't find an answer online. What you said lines up with what I thought the answer would be, but why not ask those who are more knowledgeable than me. I am very happy with my s12II (got it on sale), but I have some friends/family that will be doing computer upgrades soon and wanted to look into these PSUs a little more.

If you're considering specifically a Seasonic PSU, even if you get an OEM PSU, it will still be a better PSU than a lot of other retail brands. I went with a retail M12D myself and couldn't be happier.

That is a fantastic PSU.
I want to get one too. I just recently redid my case and my only issue is the cable mess with my non-modular S12-600. Although an otherwise superb unit.
