Default Question for SKYMTL, or any other PSU wizards.

I have a thread over at the corsair forums regarding the HX1000W model.

Basically, for over a year now, I have been testing all of them that I use in builds for customers, and according to my PSU testers (3 different ones used) more than half of them are defective.

Using a multimeter, all the voltages read well within norm, only a variation of around 1% (12.15 is the highest I have read on one of the 12v rails).

The PSU testers read fine when I plug in connectors from only one rail, but if I plug in the 24pin and 8pin cpu power connectors from 12V1, and a 6 pin PCI-E connector from 12V2, I get a -12v LL error (meaning not detected I believe), and a PG error (reads 999).

Any ideas what could be causing this? It seems like the Corsair people have no idea. The reason I care is because the units that test like this seem to cause some issues, namely cold booting problems, and video card failures after several months.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Seems to me to be a simple conflict between the PSU tester and the PSU rather than an actual issue with the HX1000.

If it were a simple conflict between this model and all of my psu testers (2 different brands of them, although internally chances are they are identical), why do only some of the HX1000Ws do it?

There is sometimes slight variances with the way load is distributed in low wattage situations (like with a PSU tester for example) from one PSU model to the next. A standard system won't see issues but the PSU tester will.

What brand and model are those tester.... I stand with SKY...they are probably the cause. some rails need a minimum load to run if those tester do not provide it... you will have the results you get.

One is the Rexus PST-3, the other is the Antec.

They have proven to be quite reliable actually ... I've used the Rexus model for 2 years. The voltage readings arn't especially accurate, but in terms of telling if a psu is functioning within the acceptable voltage range, they are pretty good. Much handier than using a multimeter.

And besides, more expensive does not always equal better.
