You think my 620HX can handle another video card? Hey all; Thinking of adding a 9800GT to my "Main Rig" in my sig. I think it could be fine but this machine would be used for folding and some gaming, so basically it would be on 24/7. Got a free PCI-E slot so I figured some more PPD wouldn't hurt... Oh yeah, the GTX 260 Core 216 in my sig is being replaced by a GTX 285. Just like to hear some thoughts from the PSU gurus! Thanks guys! Chris |
I think we had one of the users here using that same psu and having issues once he added a second card... but so I am confused...you're going to add what card? you'll have which cards in the system? |
I'll have a GTX 285 in there, and I'm thinking of adding a 9800GT. Right now the rig has a DVD drive, Blu-ray drive, Q6600 at 3.0 GHZ, two raptors, a Xonar, and a TV Tuner. Also using the Antec 900, so 4 fans. |
That might be pushing it a bit...99% sure on that. |
That was me Dave, and the HX520W. Now, the HX620W could handle the load of a 285 + 9800, but 24/7 folding is another story... TX750W for sure though. Sell the HX620W... |
Ah, the 520w...I thought there was something funny about my memory...hence my 99%! :haha: |
Humm...getting a new PSU makes this a lot more expensive. Perhaps I can juggle my cards around my two rigs. My folding rig has a Corsair 550VX. How about the power requirements for 24/7 folding if I re-arrange my cards in the following manner among my two machines: Main Rig: Corsair 620HX Q6600, 3.0oc GTX 285 9600GSO 2x 150GB raptors DVD burner Blu-ray drive Xonar sound card TV Tuner 4 fans in Antec 900 Standard USB devices (KB, mouse, etc) Folding Rig: Corsair 550VX 6400X2 Athlon stock 9800GTX+ 9800GT 7200rpm HDD DVD drive KB, mouse You think if I rearrange my video cards as above will be OK? |
Why chance it? If you want to be 100% stable for 24/7 get the TX750W. No worrying that way and no headaches down the road. |
If you mix the 285 with a slower card you might get the 'shader bug' which would cause your 285 to run slower. In Sky's review of the Evga 285 SSC it was pulling 273w Folding, and that's with a QX9770 @ 3.852. |
Find somebody that has a TX750W, or a PPC&C 750W (both non-modular) and go for a straight trade with your HX620W... |
