I haven't tried tablets, but it charges my N4 at 1.2A while charging my other phone, and running a 2.5" external drive.

It could be because of Nexus 7. It seems when Nexus 7 is plugged in it seems like nothing else is charging.

It's more about the power adapter than anything else. Mine only has 3A even though it has two 'Quick Charge' port which takes up 2A. I might just end up taking the advice of extending the USB cable from the computer.

I wanted to avoid leaving my computer on but it might be the only option. :(

A lot of modern motherboards have USB ports that can draw power directly from your power supply's standby 5V rail. (Gigabyte has been marketing this for years) So you wouldn't need to leave your system on, just plugged in with the power supply switched on.

It looks like it's supported through some sort of software according to quick read through documentation for Asus Maximus V Gene.

I usually turn off my power bar so everything is completely shut off and I should be able to use a stand alone USB hub to make this work.
