Synology devices are good, reliable, easy to understand OS and lots of features too.

Price or budget?

How many bays? 2, 4, 8 or more?

Any functionality requirement?

One could always pick up a mininitx board liek the Asus with integral e-450 and build a box with FreeNAS (my preference). For ready built, Synology, QNAP, Netgearand BlackArmour have all worked well in my experience. That's just brand names.

For better advice more info is needed. (storage only or other capabilities, capacity, expandibility, speed, cost ...

i think just one or 2 bays should be fine. its gonna be used mainly for backup so i would like something quick and reliable. i was thinking about using it for a media server too but i think im just going to build a nice htpc for that purpose.
