Default $300 headphone suggestions?

I have a friend who's keeping an eye out to see if he can snag me a $300 sale on the Sennheiser HD 650, but I'm not holding my breath as those sales come and sell out extremely fast.

What suggests do you have for $300 (or less) for headphones? I have to buy a PCIe sound card if I'm going to upgrade my headphones, so I'm really not looking to go over budget on the headphones.

EDIT: Got a lightly used HD 650 for $320 shipped, so crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!

I pulled the trigger on a slightly used HD 650 for $320 after shipping... As for the m50's, I already use the Sennheiser HD515 G4ME, so I don't think that was the upgrade I had in mind.

If I hadn't bought the 650, thanks for the suggestion on the K550, they look pretty good. The high frequency is a little lower than I'd want to see, but I definitely would have considered those.

Ok seriously. I don't know much about $300 headphones, but do you really need $300 headphones? I know the Corsair Vengeance headphones are very good already for the price.

You sir have obviously not listened to high end audio solutions before... once you hear it after sitting on lower end stuff, you really know the difference.

My 515's run off the onboard sound (mobo), which thankfully is not a low end one, but nowhere near discreet. my buddy has a $700 external amp/sound and $700 headphones and it just sounds sooooo sexy :D $300 price point is basically the next step up from where I'm at ($170-200) and I don't see the need to spend > $400 as the increased audio quality is very subjective and possibly non-existent. Probably would have made more sense if I pointed out that I'm already using the Sennheiser HD515.

The AKG K550 impressed the hell out of me, forget everything you've heard about closed cans. And they're very portable, durable and comfortable.

Yeah thats what sold me on them, I needed a closed pair to keep sound from bugging sleepers in rooms next to me, but I didnt want the closed off sound stage. These cans sound as open as a closed back set I think possibly can, their great. I dunno about portable though, I cant get mine into my day bag for work, but comfort and durability wise their great, mine spend a bit to much time on the floor and with my computer chair rolling over the cord, so far not a single sign of kicking the bucket so cudos to AKG for that. I know the OP already made his choice, just adding this final bit for future buyers ;)
