Oh I know the hassle of dealing with brother, never again. Will probably look into the recommended Sammy printer.

I can not say enough bad things about brother, I hate printers to begin with but the lack of driver support and shoddy products make me point people into any other direction other then brother.

*Oh Brother*

Funny how peoples' experience with different products varies so much. I'm on my second brother inkjet MFC product and never had a problem with the drivers over a network. The first one was one of the first affordable network printers I'd seen for the consumer market and lasted me 4+ years before the network seemed to be getting flakey (might have been compatibility issues with win7).

That said, I can't say enough about the little samsungs. Took me 3 years to get through the first toner and that did 2100+ pages. My only complaint was the error indication for replacing the toner wasn't clear... couldn't find anywhere specific that said it was the toner which prevented printing, the only indication was that it worked after I replaced the toner. I'd have been a bit PO'd if I didn't already have a toner on hand to buy one only to find out that it wasn't the toner after all.

edit: After dealing with HP wireless printers taking down local routers (Not just the wireless portion of the router, wired and wireless connections were blocked. No idea why it was happening, but unplugging the wireless printer restored the network functionality, and they finally released some info WRT the issue a good 3 - 4 months after it started showing up) I'll never have an HP in my home.

I have had an old brother MFC-9700 for years with never an issue, recently got 3 of the various HL-5000 series printers (a 5340D and 2 5370DW) and a MFC-8890DW and have not had a bit of trouble out of any of them. That 8890DW is hooked wirelessly to the network and I print to it flawlessly, make single sided paper into double sided copies, scan double sided, print double sided. I love that 8890, its a work horse. My desktop printer is a refurbished 5340 that I got for $80 and I print all sorts of things on that single and double sided and it never skips a beat. 32 pages per minute, quick response to a cold start.

When you do your research, see how much the toner cartridges are and see how much you spend to print 100,000 pages. You'd be surprised how much you will spend on that and which brands are the most expensive. I used to buy HP printers but no more.

The Brother HL-2200 series printers are a bit cheaper but use a slower print engine and won't take the higher yield TN-650 cartridges (8000 pages for $110) (althought the TN-450 cartridges (2600 for $70) are bigger than some brands) so my advice is to stick with the 5000 series printers if you just want a printer.

That Samsung ML-2955dw uses the MLT-D103L toner cartridge (2500 pages for $90)

YMMV

i would agree i had both a brother color MFC and a Samsung Mono MFC. I got rid of the samsung as the ADF would constantly jam. The brother has been flawless. Plus 123ink.ca (i think that's the site) sells the toner for it at a very reasonable price. FYI i have the 9120CN.

If you do want an MFC though stay the hell away from HP all of their MFC products are crap an unrealiable. Were i work we have had nothing but issues with them and that includes everything from the cheap 1536 to the larger 3035 series.

Well I'm thinking of going with this one:

Samsung ML-2955DW Monochrome Laser Printer 29PPM 1200X1200DPI USB2.0 Wireless Ethernet - Samsung - ML-2955DW/XAA

Will give me wireless printing so the fiancee can print when I'm not home (or my pc which is now the server is off)

Doesn't she connect through the router though? The other one just plugs into the back of the router via ethernet.

Up to you of course, but I'm not the biggest fan of using wireless unless absolutely necessary.

Hadn't thought of that, then this would would be the cheaper candidate:

Samsung ML-2955ND Laser Printer 29PPM 1200dpi Duplex Network USB2.0 - Samsung - ML-2955ND/XAA

Yeah, that's the one, although I suppose $10 isn't that much of a premium if you ever decided that you didn't want the printer married to the router location.
