Long-Range Routers I'm looking to move into a new apartment that happens to be in a building with a patio roof. My apartment will be two floors down. can anyone recommend a good router so i can get wifi on my iphone from the router in my apartment? The floors are cement and hardwood (as far as i know) and the walls are those concrete brick slab things. I've never had to go through two floors before, so i'm not sure how hard it is to get a connection. |
i cant speak for what is or isnt a good router, but ive heard plenty of good things from using custom firmware like "dd-wrt" and "Tomato" for certain routers. Maybe its worth looking into i suppose, sorry i cant be of any more help. |
Not very knowledgeable in this area but Amped Wireless dose have a high power wireless router which was benchmarked recently. However, looking on Newegg reviews, none of their stuff is above 3 stars. You can try a metal funnel shaped \.../ to direct a signal up maybe, and sit over it if you can. |

I use a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT (3rd party firmware).you can do alot with ithis setup including turning up the power to the antennas for more range, with High gain (2 7dBi Antennas RP TNC Linksys WRT54G WRT54GS WRT54G-TM | eBay) antennas it puts out a pretty strong signal. Hack Attack: Turn your $60 router into a $600 router Mind you this setup has been around for years and I am not sure about new router tech.I believe wireless N is made for better range than G type |
But DD-WRT can only max out the power on those routers to 240mW and not 600mW like Amped Wireless. I have the same set up as rfglass and it does work pretty well in a wooden house but can't say the same for a concrete building. |
